William Emmett Cross (February 7, 1945 – May 11, 2021)
William Emmett Cross, beloved husband of Barbara Lothrop Cross, died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Westport, CT on May 11, 2021. He was 76 years old.
Bill was born on February 7, 1945, in Dennison, Ohio to George Edson and Gertrude Alverda Sheets Cross. He grew up in Sherrodsville, Ohio, where he helped run the family farm with his parents and his brother, Leonard Cross. He attended school in Dellroy and Carrollton, Ohio and went on to earn an accounting degree from Bowling Green State University, where he met Barbara. They were married immediately upon graduation in 1968, and two months later he enlisted in the Army as a Finance Officer.
In 1970, Bill began his accounting career at Lothrop Associates Architects in White Plains, New York. He settled in Westport, CT where he and Barbara raised their family and began restoring their colonial-era home on Green’s Farms Road.
Bill continued his accounting career with Fairfield Venture Capital. In more recent years, Bill turned his skills and love of home repairs, maintenance, and restorations into a full-time business, working on a wide variety of residential projects. Nothing brought him more satisfaction than using his ingenuity and perseverance to solve problems around the homes of his delighted, loyal clients.
He was tremendously devoted to his family and friends, and loved when they gathered at his home. He enjoyed long walks at the beach with Barbara, and was known to strike up friendly conversations with the people he encountered in his day-to-day life. He was an avid fan of UConn women’s basketball.
In addition to his wife, Barbara, Bill is survived by his three sons, three daughters-in-law, and seven grandchildren: Todd and Estee (Battista) Cross and their children, Nicholas and Isabella, of Pelham, New York; Brian and Kathryn (Means) Cross and their children, Emmett, Grace, and Gabriel, of Lombard, Illinois; and Kevin and Melanie (Borgmann) Cross and their children, Julia and George, of Denver, Colorado. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, George and Alverda.
A memorial service in celebration of Bill’s life will be held at the Congregational Church of Green’s Farms in Westport, CT on Friday, October 8, 2021, at 11:00. The Harding Funeral Home in Westport, CT is assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences for the family may be left online at www.hardingfuneral.com. Contributions in memory of Bill may be made to Green’s Farms Church, Westport, CT.
